You finished your picture book, you went to upload it to Amazon KDP, and now there's a wall of words like trim size, bleed, safe margin, and DPI. Here's the plain version: trim size is the finished page size, bleed is extra art past the trim so there's no white edge after cutting, the safe margin keeps important stuff away from the cut, and DPI is how sharp your images print. Get those four right and most KDP rejections never happen. Let's take them one at a time.

First-time picture-book authors get rejected for boring, fixable reasons, not for the story. The print specs are the gatekeeper. They feel intimidating because they're described in printer language, but there are only a handful of them and they're all common sense once you translate.

What is trim size?

Trim size is the dimensions of your finished book after the printer cuts the pages. A square book, a tall portrait book, a wide landscape book: each is a trim size. You pick one, and every page has to be built to it.

The mistake people make is designing pages at some arbitrary shape and hoping it maps onto a KDP size later. It doesn't. Pick your trim first, then build into it. Picture books especially live and die on shape, because a two-page spread only works if both pages are the same known size.

KDP supports a range of trim sizes, and the common picture-book picks are square (around 8.5 x 8.5 in) or portrait (like 8 x 10 or 8.5 x 11 in). Paperback trims have to fall inside KDP's limits, roughly 4 to 8.5 in wide and 6 to 11.69 in tall, so a very wide landscape shape may not be available in paperback. Check KDP's current print options for the exact supported sizes before you build.

What is bleed, and why does my art need it?

Bleed is extra artwork extending past the trim line, so that when the printer's blade cuts the page, there's no thin white sliver at the edge. Printers can't cut to a perfect hairline every time, so they cut into a buffer instead. If your art stops exactly at the trim, a tiny shift leaves a white border. If it bleeds past, the cut lands in the extra and the color runs clean off the edge.

For picture books this matters constantly, because so many pages are full-bleed: the illustration covers the entire page, edge to edge, no white frame. That's the look kids expect. Every one of those pages needs its art to extend past the trim by the required bleed amount.

KDP trims about 0.125 in (3.2 mm) off the top, bottom, and outer edges, so full-bleed art has to run at least that far past the trim. In practice you build your interior PDF 0.125 in wider and 0.25 in taller than the trim size (the extra height covers both the top and the bottom), following KDP's bleed guidance.

What's the safe margin?

The flip side of bleed. Bleed is the stuff that's allowed to get cut off; the safe margin is the zone where nothing important should live, because it might get cut off or swallowed into the spine.

Keep your text, faces, and anything that can't be clipped comfortably inside the safe area. The classic rookie error is putting a line of read-aloud text right at the edge, or a character's face tucked into the gutter where the pages meet. Pull them in. The middle of the page is your friend.

KDP asks you to keep text and anything important at least about 0.25 in inside the trimmed edges, and to leave extra room in the gutter, the inside margin by the spine. That gutter needs to grow as your page count climbs, because a thicker book curves more into the spine. When in doubt, pull the content in.

What DPI and resolution does KDP want?

DPI (dots per inch) is print sharpness. A picture that looks crisp on screen can print muddy if it doesn't have enough actual pixels for its size on paper. Print needs far more resolution than a screen does.

The fix is to make sure your illustrations are generated or exported at print resolution for the size they'll appear, not upscaled after the fact from something small. A blurry full-page illustration is one of the most common reasons a picture book looks amateur in print even when the art is good.

The number KDP wants is a minimum of 300 DPI at final print size, and up to 600 is fine. Hit 300 and your art prints sharp. Fall below it and a full-page picture that looked crisp on screen can turn muddy in print.

What trips people up most?

The same short list, over and over:

  • Designing pages at a shape that isn't a real KDP trim size, then trying to retrofit.
  • Full-bleed art that stops at the trim instead of bleeding past it, so white edges appear after the cut.
  • Text or faces too close to the edge or buried in the gutter.
  • Low-resolution images that look fine on a laptop and print soft.
  • Forgetting that a spread needs two consistently-sized pages, or the spread won't line up.

Common questions

Do I really need bleed if my pages have white backgrounds?

If any element touches or runs off the edge, yes, that element needs to bleed. If every page sits on a generous white background with nothing near the edge, bleed matters less, but picture books are usually full of edge-to-edge art, so plan for bleed by default.

Can I change my trim size after I've made all the pages?

You can, but it's painful, because changing the page shape can re-crop your art and break your spreads. Pick the trim before you build the pages. Deciding shape first is the single best way to avoid a redo.

Why does my art look fine on screen but blurry in print?

Screens forgive low resolution; print doesn't. If an image doesn't have enough real pixels for the size it prints at, it goes soft. Generate or export at print resolution for the final page size rather than enlarging a small image.

What's the safest trim size for a first picture book?

Square and standard portrait sizes are common, well-supported choices for picture books. Pick a shape that suits your art and that your print service clearly supports, then build every page to it. (Verify the exact supported sizes against current KDP specs.)
