You made a gorgeous character on page one. By page seven she's a different kid, different hair, different face, maybe a whole new nose. Why do AI characters drift between images? Because each image is generated on its own, with no memory of the last one, so every page is a fresh roll of the dice. The fix isn't a better prompt. It's a character the tool actually remembers.

The memory of a goldfish

Here's the thing nobody tells you when you start. Most AI image tools don't remember anything between pictures. You type a prompt, you get an image, and then that image is gone from the tool's mind the instant it's done. The next prompt starts from zero.

So when you ask for "the same girl, now climbing a tree," the tool doesn't actually have "the same girl." It has your words. And your words, however careful, leave a thousand tiny choices open: the exact tilt of her eyes, the freckle pattern, whether her hair is more copper or more gold today. The tool fills those gaps randomly, every single time.

Twelve pages, twelve rolls of the dice. That's not your character across a book; that's twelve artists who never spoke to each other, each drawing their own idea of a kid from the same vague description.

But I wrote such a detailed prompt

You did. And it helped, a little. "A seven-year-old girl with shoulder-length curly red hair, green eyes, a gap tooth, and a yellow raincoat" pins down more than "a girl." Good prompts narrow the dice.

But they can't close the gap, for two reasons. First, words are low-resolution. "Curly red hair" describes a million different heads. Second, the longer your prompt, the more the tool starts trading off: nail the raincoat, lose the gap tooth. Add more detail and you're not removing the randomness, you're just moving it around. People who try to prompt their way to consistency end up writing a paragraph per page and still getting a stranger on page nine.

The structural fix: stop describing, start reusing

The real fix isn't a cleverer description. It's not describing the character fresh each page at all. Instead, you define the character once, and the tool reuses that exact definition on every page. A persistent cast.

Think of it like the difference between telling a new illustrator "draw a red-haired girl" twelve times, versus hiring one illustrator who's drawn this exact girl before and has her model sheet pinned to the wall. The second one gives you the same kid every time, because she's not guessing. She's remembering.

When the character persists, the dice stop rolling. You don't re-describe her face on page seven because page seven is reaching back for the same character you already built. The freckles match. The gap tooth's still there. The yellow raincoat is the same yellow.
